In view of the second wave of the Corona pandemic in Argentina, the government in Buenos Aires has again imposed strict curfew restrictions for large parts of the South American country. In Greater Buenos Aires, a curfew will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday, President Alberto Fernandez announced Wednesday (local time). Only workers in essential sectors are exempt.

All social, sports, cultural and religious events indoors will be prohibited. Schools and kindergartens will close until the end of April. About 14.8 million people live in the Buenos Aires metropolitan region – that’s about 37 percent of Argentina’s total population.

Most recently, the number of new infections in Argentina had reached new highs. On Tuesday, 27,000 new Corona cases were registered – more than at any time since the pandemic began about a year ago. On Wednesday, the Health Ministry reported 368 deaths linked to Covid-19 – the most since mid-January. In all, about 2.6 million people have been confirmed to have been infected with the coronavirus, and more than 58,500 have died.
